BITS

Note: The mouthpieces in my bits are all mild steel and are built with enough copper--either slugs in the cannon or wraps on the braces--to promote a wet mouth.  All silver overlays are sterling silver hard-soldered to the cheeks, and any inlays are fine silver.

All prices include shipping to the contiguous U.S.  Contact me for shipping charges to addresses outside the contiguous U.S.

Nevada Cheek:  These 7 1/4" long cheeks, also referred to as "banana cheeks", make a real nice lighter weight using bits.  This one has a 5 1/8" wide, 2" tall, copper-hooded San Joaquin mouthpiece but can be built with whichever mouthpiece you like.  Price: $765.00.  Add a set of my handbuilt fancy rein chains for an additional $75.00.

GW Bit:  I named this calvary style cheek bit in honor of the rancher who owned and used the original for a lot of years, and in a lot of horses mouths, throughout the ION region.  GW's daughter was generous enough to allow me to make a pattern off of the original, which was ranch built on the TS druing  the 1940's, and I've done my best to stay true to the original.  I really like the balance of this bit as well as the old-time style.  The cheeks are 8" long and the cheeks and slobber bar are inlaid with wide silver bars.  The mouthpiece is 5 1/8" wide and is built out of 3/8" diameter stock with inlaid copper slugs.  Included are the handbuilt fancy rein chains shown.  Price: $650.00

Santa Barbara Bridle:  A traditional vaquero cheek pattern adorned with silver buttons and engraved steel, finished in antique blue.  The mouth is 5 1/8" wide with a low spoon mouthpiece and the cheeks are 7" long.  Price: $800.00.  Add a set of my fancy handbuilt rein chains for an additional $75.00. SOLD

El Toro Bridle.  Loose cheek bridle bit.  Shown with spoon spade mouthpiece.  Price 800.00.  Add a set of my handbuilt fancy rein chains for an additional $75.00.  SOLD.

Las Cruces Bridle.  Solid jaw bridle bit.  This is a real classic.  Price, including lipping chains and the mouthpiece of your choice: $850.00.  Add a set of my handbuilt fancy rein chains for an additional $75.00.  SOLD.

BRIDLE REIN CHAINS

After a bit of soul searching I've decided to refocus my creative energy towards building what I have always been most passionate about building--bits and spurs.  I will no longer offer for sale nor take orders to build fancy style rein chains.  The only exception to this is that if you order a bit and would like a set of my fancy style chains to go with that bit I will build and install a pair for a cost of $100.00/pair.

I am working up a basic style rein chain design which I hope to be able to sell for about $60.00/pair.  When I get some built I will post pictures here.

I am currently aware of only one maker who concentrates solely on hand-crafting artisan quality fancy style rein chains.  While it is certainly possible that there are dedicated chain makers of whom I am not aware, any of you desiring a pair of truly spectacular fancy style rein chains will do no better than to get ahold of Fred Payden of Applecart Chainworks in Jordan Valley, Oregon.  You can see examples of his work at www.applecartchainworks.com.
